Week one! We have an entire flat of seedlings! I am floored at how quickly they grew! I have a about a half a flat waiting to germinate yet and started another half today – mostly herbs and flowers and replacing veggies/fruit that damped off.
A friendship plant and a PINK hydrangea have taken up residency in my greenhouse. The pink hydrangea lead to a conversation with the kiddo about how boys can like pink and girls can like blue.
I also crafted the most ridiculous giraffe for kiddo today:
This is our greenhouse set up. It’s killing me a bit to have the light on constantly, but I have convinced myself that it will all equal out in the end….
Anyhoo. The set up. We picked up the greenhouse at Home Depot for $25, four flats of Jiffy Seed starter greenhouses and “plant” light bulbs for our clip on laps (scavenged from the studio.) We also stuck a heating pad in the greenhouse, not under the plants because it’s a people heating pad, not a plant heating pad. So, with the addition of the heating pad, the lights are keeping it about 70-72 degrees in the greenhouse.
Kiddo helped me plant about 5 seeds before declaring that it was “boring” and wandered off. I guess planting inside is not as exciting as casting about seeds outdoors. Oh well. She and I started two scarlet runner beans for her, so she can watch them grow. I will post photos of that later.
I’m pretty pleased with my little set up and getting excited to get out and dig in the garden, which is currently under another 5 or so inches of fresh snow. (Also it was 7 degrees outside when we left for school and work this morning. Boo.)
In order to get jump start our finances/budgeting, the husband and I have decided to do a “No Spend Month” – inspiration from Small Notebook.
Starting this at the holiday’s is either the worst idea I have ever had, or the best.
We are going to start out with $400. We will move the money to our interest baring checking account and check the balance daily. Bills and necessities will be excluded from the “No Spend Month”, we obviously can’t say to Chase “So, ah, we’re doing this no spend thing, so we won’t be paying out mortgage this month…”
Hopefully we will have most of the $400 left at the end of the month.
Kiddo is convinced that when she is being, the hubs will be tiny.
Kiddo: When I get big, I will drive the car.
Kiddo: And Daddy will be tiny and he will ride in my car seat.
This morning when I went to let the dog out I noticed that our ENTIRE cedar was full of these guys:
Oh, and our cedar is apparently a Juniperus Virginiana
